GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide
We install GAF-compatible ridge vents on Miami homes, with most jobs running between $450 and $850 installed depending on roofline length and whether the old vent material needs full removal. If your ridge vent is cracked, sun-baked, or pulling away from the shingles, we typically have what we need on the truck and can match the replacement to your existing GAF roof system.
Most owners discover the problem the hard way: attic temperatures climb, the AC runs nonstop in August, or a storm blows water in along the ridge line. Sometimes a neighbor points out the torn plastic mesh flapping at the roofline. By Miami standards, a vent that gets direct sun all day has a working life of about 10 to 15 years before the plastic gets brittle. The good news is this is one of the more straightforward roof repairs, and the price of ignoring it is higher than the price of fixing it.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF makes two main ridge vent lines you’ll find on Miami roofs: the Cobra series and the Snow Country line. For our climate, you’re almost certainly dealing with Cobra, typically the Cobra Ridge Runner or Cobra Exhaust Vent. Snow Country is rated for heavy snow loads, which is not a Miami problem, and we rarely see it on homes here.
The compatibility issue most owners run into is this: GAF’s master flow warranty depends on pairing the ridge vent with GAF shingles. If your roof has CertainTeed or Owens Corning shingles, the vent still works mechanically, but GAF won’t stand behind the system as a whole. We carry both OEM GAF vent and quality equivalents from our other manufacturer partners, including Owens Corning and CertainTeed, so if you’ve got a mixed roof we can match what’s actually up there. The key measurement is the vent width, most commonly 11.25 inches for standard ridge applications, and the nail line spacing, which should sit 3/4 inch from the cut edge of the vent material.
Tilehurst Roofing is an independent service provider and not affiliated with GAF. When you call us, you get our labor and materials pricing, not a manufacturer’s rebate program, and that’s the honest way to keep the number on the page true.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Brittle or cracked plastic along the ridge line. Miami’s UV exposure breaks down the polymer vent material faster than anywhere in the country, and once hairline cracks start, water entry becomes a matter of time.
- Water stains on the ceiling near interior walls rather than under obvious roof valleys. Ridge leaks follow the peak of the roof, so stains often appear along central wall lines or in the upper corners of rooms.
- Insulation that looks flattened or matted near the attic peak. Wind-driven rain gets through a failing ridge vent and pats down whatever insulation sits below it.
- Attic temperatures noticeably higher during the day. A working ridge vent pulls hot air out continuously; when the vent is plugged with debris or the baffle collapses, the attic turns into an oven and your AC works harder.
- Shingle damage or lifted sections right at the ridge. The vent and the ridge cap shingles work as one assembly. When the vent material warps, it pushes shingles aside and exposes nail heads.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Miami, you should expect to pay between $450 and $850 for a full ridge vent replacement on a typical single-family home. A shorter roofline, around 30 to 40 linear feet, falls on the low end. A longer ridge or a two-story home with multiple peaks pushes toward the higher number. Tear-off of the old vent material, new vent matched to your GAF system, fresh fasteners, and re-seating the ridge cap shingles are all part of the price.
What drives the range in this market is the condition of what’s underneath. If the decking along the ridge is rotted from years of slow leaks, that gets replaced before anything else, and that’s the single biggest cost variable we see in Miami. The other is access: second-story ridge lines need ladder work and sometimes staging, which adds time but shouldn’t add mystery to your invoice.
Here’s what our written quote line-items look like on this job:
- Remove and dispose of existing ridge vent material: $80 – $150
- Inspect and repair ridge decking as needed: $0 – $200 depending on condition
- Install new GAF-compatible ridge vent with fasteners: $250 – $400
- Reseat or replace ridge cap shingles: $120 – $220
Every line is in writing before any work starts, and the install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right, for a full year after the job, at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things before calling anyone. First, look at the ridge line from the ground with a pair of binoculars. If you see cracked plastic, lifted shingles, or exposed nail heads, that’s enough to make the call. Second, if you have a finished attic with an access hatch, check the insulation near the peak for water staining or matting. Walking a roof to inspect the ridge up close is where we draw the line for homeowners. The ridge is the highest point on the house, and Miami’s afternoon rain showers make a roof surface slippery faster than anyone expects.
The replacement itself is not a weekend project. Getting the vent properly seated so it doesn’t leak requires matching the manufacturer’s nail line, setting the cap shingles with the right exposure, and repairing any decking damage you can’t see until the old vent is off. Greg Holloway and our crew handle this work in a single visit most days, and we leave the old material hauled away. Call (850) 613-1762 and we’ll give you a written price before anything goes on the roof.
FAQs
Expect 10 to 15 years from a ridge vent in Miami’s sun and humidity before the plastic gets brittle and starts cracking. The vent is out in direct UV every day of the year, and that’s simply the working life of the material in this climate. If yours is older than a decade and you’re seeing cracks or water stains, replacement is the right move.
Small tears in the vent material can sometimes be patched, but the patch rarely lasts more than a season in Miami’s heat. The plastic that’s already failing will keep failing. For a vent that’s more than eight years old, we recommend full replacement of the vent section rather than chasing patches. Call (850) 613-1762 and we’ll tell you which one applies after a look.
Most ridge vent replacements take half a day from setup to cleanup. Removing the old material, checking the decking, installing the new vent, and reseating the cap shingles is a single-visit job on a typical Miami home. We’ll give you a time window when you schedule and the crew arrives in it.
Yes. We carry GAF-compatible ridge vent material in the standard 11.25-inch width on our trucks, along with matching fasteners and replacement cap shingles. For longer ridge lines or specialty sizing, we can typically have the right material in hand within a business day. Call (850) 613-1762 to schedule a free estimate.
