CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent on Miami roofs, with most full ridge vent replacements running between $450 and $900 installed depending on roof length and access. If your current ridge vent is cracked, sun-baked, or pulling away from the shingles, we can usually get the swap done the same week. Most Miami homeowners discover the problem after a rainstorm, when water stains appear on the ceiling near the peak of the roof. That’s the ridge vent quietly failing in a climate that punishes plastic and rubber like few others. Greg Holloway has been tracing leaks back to broken ridge vents across Coral Gables and the rest of Miami for years, and the culprit is almost always the same: UV-cooked plastic that finally gave out.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes two ridge vent lines you’re likely to find on a Miami roof: the ShingleVent II and the Air Vent RidgeFilter. The ShingleVent II is the workhorse, a black plastic vent with an external baffle design that runs in 4-foot sections. The RidgeFilter is the shingle-over premium version with a woven filter media that blocks wind-driven rain and insect intrusion. The gotcha: the two are not interchangeable on the same run. You can’t splice a RidgeFilter section into a ShingleVent II run and expect the profile or airflow to line up. If your roof has the RidgeFilter installed and part of the run has failed, you’re replacing the entire run, not just the bad section. CertainTeed also sells the CertiRidge covers for both lines, so you’ll want to check if your ridge cap shingles are pre-cut or field-cut. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for ridge vent, we recommend staying with CertainTeed or a direct equivalent that matches the profile. An unbranded vent that’s “close enough” in profile will leak at the seams where the pieces meet, and Miami’s afternoon thunderstorms will find that seam within a season.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling near interior ridge lines. This is the classic first symptom. The vent itself is cracked or the cap shingles have lifted, and wind-driven rain is finding a path under the vent and into the attic.
  • Visible cracks or warping in the vent plastic when you view the roof from the ground. Miami’s UV index is brutal on black plastic. Seven to ten years of direct sun and the vent material turns brittle and starts splitting along the nail lines.
  • Ridge cap shingles lifting or missing at the peak. The cap shingles protect the vent and hold it down. Once they curl or blow off, the vent is exposed and starts working itself loose with every breeze coming off Biscayne Bay.
  • Hot attic temperatures despite no obvious storm damage. A vent that’s crushed or blocked stops drawing hot air out. You’ll notice the attic feeling like a sauna and your AC running noticeably longer during Miami’s summer months.
  • Visible gaps between vent sections where the 4-foot pieces meet. Temperature swings expand and contract the plastic. Over several harsh Miami summers, the sections pull apart at the seams and create an open channel for rain.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical single-story Miami home with a 30 to 40 foot ridge line, a full CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent replacement runs $450 to $900 installed. That includes removing the old vent and cap shingles, inspecting the decking and underlayment beneath, installing the new vent run, and capping it with new ridge shingles. Longer ridge lines, steep pitches, or a roof that requires extra decking repair will push toward the upper end. We write the price before any work starts, so you’ll know the exact number while you’re still deciding. Every replacement is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the new vent leaks or loses cap shingles within a year, we return at no charge. The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. No change orders when we discover the decking is worse than expected, no surprises at the door.

DIY or Call Us?

Installing a ridge vent is a roof-peak job on a pitched surface, usually 15 to 25 feet off the ground. One wrong step on a damp morning shingle and you’re in the emergency room. That’s not boilerplate caution; it’s the reality of working at the highest point of a Miami home where afternoon dew never fully dries in shaded sections. What you can safely do from the ground is identify whether the vent is visibly cracked or the cap shingles are missing. What we don’t recommend is walking the ridge line with a nail gun without proper fall protection and experience matching the vent to your existing cut. If you want a professional eye on it first, call us at (850) 613-1762. We’ll tell you what we see from the ladder and put a written price in your hand before anything gets removed.
