IKO Shingle Repair: The Miami Owner’s Guide

IKO shingle repair in Miami typically runs $350 to $900 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and whether the underlayment underneath took water. We stock IKO-compatible shingles on our trucks and can match most Cambridge, Dynasty, and Nordic series colors the same day we inspect. Most homeowners discover the problem after a hard South Florida downpour, when they spot granules in the gutter, a shingle flap lifting in the wind, or a water stain creeping across the bedroom ceiling.

Miami’s climate punishes shingles differently than anywhere else. The ultraviolet load from near-constant sun bakes the asphalt and dries out the adhesive strip on IKO shingles faster than in northern climates. Add hurricane-season wind gusts that grab any loose corner and peel the shingle back, and you get a repair cycle that surprises new homeowners. Greg Holloway and our crew at Tilehurst Roofing Miami have walked hundreds of Miami roofs where the IKO shingles themselves were still structurally sound, but the sealant strip had given out under the heat. That’s the repair we do most often.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

The IKO line breaks into three main series we see across Miami: Cambridge (their architectural laminate, the most common), Dynasty (a heavier architectural shingle with a wider exposure), and Nordic (a premium architectural shingle rated for high winds). The repair approach differs slightly for each. Cambridge shingles come in a standard 13-1/4 by 39-3/8 inch dimension with a 5-5/8 inch exposure. Dynasty runs the same exposure but adds weight and a different nailing zone. Nordic uses a reinforced fabric strip and a different adhesive pattern that matters when you’re replacing individual shingles on a slope.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: IKO changed their granule blend in the mid-2010s on several Cambridge colors. A shingle you buy today in a given color name may not match the roof you had installed in 2012. The color name on the bundle is the same, but the granule mix shifted subtly. We keep sample boards of current IKO production colors on the truck so you can see the match in daylight before we install anything. For older Miami roofs where the color drifted, we’ll sometimes pull shingles from a less-visible slope to repair a street-facing section, then install the new stock where nobody sees it.

OEM versus aftermarket: IKO doesn’t sell “repair parts” separately from their shingle bundles, so when you need a repair, you’re either buying IKO shingles at a roofing supply house or using a compatible alternative from a different manufacturer. We prefer genuine IKO when the roof is newer than five years and the color match matters. For older roofs, a high-quality compatible shingle from GAF, Owens Corning, or CertainTeed can work fine structurally, but the color and texture won’t be perfect. We’ll tell you the difference and let you decide before we order anything. Tilehurst Roofing Miami is an independent local roofing company, not an IKO affiliate, so our loyalty is to your roof, not any single manufacturer.

Signs Your IKO Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules piling up in the gutter. IKO shingles shed granules as they age, but a sudden heavy accumulation means the asphalt layer is degrading faster than normal. On Miami roofs, this usually shows up first on the west-facing slopes that catch the afternoon sun. Left alone, bare asphalt exposes the fiberglass mat to water.
  • Shingle corners lifting or flapping. The adhesive strip on an IKO shingle fails under sustained heat, and then any breeze gets under the edge. You’ll see it first on the roof’s windward corners or along the rake edge. Once a shingle lifts, it becomes a sail in the next thunderstorm and tears neighboring shingles with it.
  • Water stains on the ceiling after a storm. This is the symptom that gets people to call. By the time a stain shows inside, the leak has usually been working for weeks, traveling under the shingles, along the felt, and finding a nail hole or seam in the decking. The visible stain is almost never directly under the failed shingle.
  • Shingles that feel brittle when you touch them. A healthy asphalt shingle flexes slightly. One that’s been baked by Miami sun for a decade snaps or crumbles. Brittle shingles crack when walked on, which compounds the damage during any repair or inspection.
  • Nails backing out through the shingle surface. Thermal expansion and contraction cycles in South Florida push nails up over time. A nail head visible through the shingle means the shingle is no longer fully secured, and water can follow that nail shaft down into the decking.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most IKO shingle repairs in Miami run $350 to $900 installed. A single shingle replacement on a one-story ranch with easy ladder access sits at the low end. Replacing a ten-square-foot section that includes underlayment replacement, decking inspection, and re-sealing neighboring shingles falls toward the top. If the repair area includes ridge cap or flashing, the number moves accordingly.

Every quote from Tilehurst Roofing Miami breaks the price into two lines: materials and labor. You’ll see what the IKO shingles cost, what the underlayment and fasteners cost, and what the crew time costs. That written price is in your hand before a single nail moves, and it doesn’t change at the door. The repair carries a written guarantee delivered before the crew leaves, and if the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. No homeowner in Miami should accept a shingle repair quote that’s a single number with no breakdown.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground or a ladder without touching the roof. Look for granules in the gutter, count the lifted shingle corners you can see, and check the ceiling for water marks. Taking photos helps us give you a rough range over the phone.

What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a Miami roof in the middle of a heat index warning with a hammer and a bundle of shingles. The slope is steeper than it looks from the yard, the decking may be soft under a failed shingle, and a fall from a single-story roof is more than enough to change your life permanently. Repeated foot traffic on older IKO shingles also causes more cracking. If you’re curious about the process, we’re glad to walk you through what we found during the inspection. But the actual repair belongs on a ladder with a harness. Call (850) 613-1762 if you want us to take a look.
